Dental implants are typically made of titanium, a biocompatible material that integrates with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration. This integration provides a stable foundation for artificial teeth, mimicking the natural tooth structure and function.

Some implants may also use zirconia, a ceramic material, especially for patients with metal allergies or specific aesthetic requirements.

With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last a lifetime. Their longevity depends on factors such as oral hygiene, lifestyle habits (e.g., smoking), and regular dental check-ups. While the implant itself is very durable, the crown or prosthetic attached to it may need replacement after 10-15 years due to normal wear and tear.

The dental implant procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, making it painless during the surgery. Patients may experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the days following the procedure, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications and proper post-operative care. Most patients find the discomfort to be less than they expected and manageable.

Good candidates for dental implants are individuals with good oral health and sufficient jawbone density to support the implant. Patients should also have healthy gums and be free from conditions that can affect bone healing, such as uncontrolled diabetes or smoking. Those with insufficient bone density may still qualify for implants after undergoing bone grafting procedures.
